Sample letter to CR Chelverton

This is a sample letter to send to CR Chelverton, the developers behind the idea for a new supermarket and canal bypass road. Feel free to just copy the text, but it's good to let your imagination free and to write a really stinking letter to them...

(Here's the letter in Rich Text Format - all word processors should be able to deal with this).

Dear Simon,

I am writing to you to voice my strong
objections to your proposals for the
Kingsway/Mitchell's Brewery site in
Lancaster. You have stated that you feel
local concerns are "premature", that we
"don't know what we're concerned about".
We do however know that we do not want
a canal bypass. Nor do we want a new
supermarket. Your plans for a canal
bypass go against the wishes of the
local population - expressed in the
interim local plan which was formulated
in consultation with our community. A
public enquiry has also found the idea of
a road to be flawed.

A road alongside the canal will divide
our community by creating a steel and
fume barrier between the west of our city
and the city centre. There is a
long-standing consensus among traffic
experts, and also government policy that
new roads don't ease congestion, but
create new traffic and new congestion.
This is contrary to your claims that a
new road will ease congestion on the
one-way system. The best you (or rather
we) can hope for is that a canal bypass
may cause a fall in traffic on the one-
way system for a few short months.

You need a road to bring traffic to your
new supermarket, but we don't need or want
another supermarket in Lancaster. On
average, every time a new supermarket opens,
276 jobs are lost in the local area.
Lancaster needs those jobs, and not the
handful of low-skilled low-paid supermarket
jobs that will replace them. Nor do we need
more juggernauts thundering through our town,
adding to congestion and pollution to make
deliveries to your new supermarket.

I agree that the string of car-parks
alongside the canal needs to be developed,
and I thank you because your unacceptable
plans have encouraged us, as a community to
begin discussing positive alternatives,
including a wider urban park along the
canal, dedicated space for skateboarding
and affordable housing within the city centre.
We could do none of these next to your busy,
polluted canal bypass. You say that you want
a wide consultation with the community - so
why are you only planning to consult us in
spring 2003 when the plans will be submitted
to the council? We appreciate that CR
Chelverton is backed by international
businesses, and that local interests may
not be as lucrative as big box retailing -
but that is precisely why we believe that your
company is not suited to the task of
developing this area. I would therefore
appreciate it if you would withdraw your
proposals forthwith.

I would like to assure you of my commitment to
fight your proposals every step of the planning
and construction procedure.

Yours faithfully,
